I came in with the existing user research and customer profiles the team had built, used them as a foundation for every design decision, and asked the questions that weren't being asked - about the sustainability strategy, content hierarchy, what users would actually do versus what the brief assumed. For Maripedia specifically, I designed and ran usability tests on the prototype before final delivery, validating that the pattern recognition flows and storytelling structure worked for real users - not just in theory. Contribution Across four parallel workstreams I brought consistency, rigour and a willingness to push back when something wasn't good enough yet. The sustainability experience needed to feel genuinely integrated, not bolted on. The design system needed to scale across platforms without losing Marimekko's visual character. Their mission was to rethink the student rental experience - making it more sustainable, more human and more trustworthy in a market dominated by faceless landlords and overpriced, poorly maintained properties. Through stakeholder interviews and analysising the student housing journey, I built a full service blueprint mapping the experience from awareness through to contract end - covering customer actions, front-of-stage interactions, back-of-stage processes and support. This gave the founding team a shared picture of where Homie needed to show up, what students and parents needed at each stage, and where the biggest gaps were versus the competition. From that foundation, I facilitated a brand discovery workshop with the team to define values, tone of voice and positioning. Homie became: friendly not preachy, sustainable but practical, relatable not juvenile. Collaboratively we developed three personas (Peter, Shelley, Ann) spanning the core user types: the student renter, the student searching independently, and the reassurance-seeking parent. Families in Berlin don't own cars because they need them for every journey. They own them because a car represents freedom, the cheapest option for family travel, and an everyday comfort that makes life feel easier and more enjoyable. Car-free living felt like a downgrade, not a choice. This insight reframed the design challenge entirely: the solution couldn't just replace the car. It had to match or exceed what the car felt like to own. The Approach We used systems mapping to understand the full ecosystem of stakeholders, from housing cooperatives and government bodies to mobility services and local businesses, and identified where Volvo could partner rather than compete. A phased rollout from co-op formation through to a 100-home MVP, positioning Volvo as a founding partner in post-car urban living rather than a car manufacturer defending its market. <img width="1900" a strategic provocation, evidence that the challenges facing urban families require genuinely new thinking from the mobility sector. Whether Volvo acts on it is their decision. What we demonstrated is that the path to car-free living runs through making it feel like an upgrade.
